Betts-97; Eimer-395; MI-236/18. Struck in silver. 37 mm. 17.7 grams. The obverse, designed by John Croker, features a crowned bust of Queen Anne facing left, a lovelock across her shoulder. The reverse features a detailed bird's eye view of the narrow-mouth harbor with Anglo-Dutch vessels bottling up the burning Spanish and French ships in the inner port. Struck to commemorate the successful destruction of the French and Spanish fleets at Vigo Bay and the seizure of the treasure carried by those ships. Splendid original pewter-gray surfaces exhibit champagne and pale blue overtones. Struck from the silver captured at Vigo Bay. An historic and very rare piece.
