Rulau-TX-SA 140 - (1881-99) S. A. Light Newspaper, San Antonio, TX / NGC MS-64
Rulau-TX-SA 140; TC-95830. Struck in brass with a plain edge. 23 mm. Octagonal. The obverse features a large rosette in the center with S.A. above and LIGHT below. The reverse features a very large 3/4 which was crudely rendered into the die. Both sides have a beaded border. The San Antonio Light was a newspaper which started in 1881 and closed down in 1899. It was the only Republican daily in the Democrat dominated state (my how times have changed!), and enjoyed one of the largest readerships in the San Antonio area. Despite research by TAMS, no one really knows what these tokens were used for, although it is speculated in Rulau that they were used in some kind of tally amongst the news boys. Lustrous brass color with highlights of green and yellow.
