Judd-2188 - (1999) Martha Washington One Dollar Pattern / NGC MS-65
Judd-2185 non-manganese variant; Pollock-unlisted. Struck in a 77% copper, 20% zinc, and 3% nickel alloy. Rarity High R.7 (less than 6 existent). The obverse has a portrait of Martha Washington facing right with VIRGINIA above, the date 1759 below, and IN GOD WE TRUST in the right field, while the reverse shows a view of Mount Vernon and HOME OF THE WASHINGTON FAMILY. This design omits a denomination and country of origin. The piece was struck circa 1999 when the Sacagawea dollar was planned with a "golden" color to distinguish it from a quarter. The letter N was crudely entered into the left and right obverse fields to identify pieces struck with that die as being the non-manganese alloy. The piece exhibits rich golden-apricot color, deeper than seen on the typical Martha Washington pattern dollar. Crisply struck, lustrous, and well preserved with the only apparent flaw being a small tick on Martha's cheek. Pollock does not specifically list this variant. While NGC chose to identify this (incorrectly) as Judd-2185, the more up to date designation for the "N" and "N" variant given by Saul Teichman and Andy Lustig is Judd-2188. While the Judd-2185 is a rarity Low R.7, based on actual appearances by the "N and N" variety, Judd-2188, is a rarity High R.7.
