Judd-1164 - 1871 Liberty Quarter Eagle / PCGS PR-64 BN
Rarity High 7 (less than 6 existent). Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The regular dies for the 1871 Liberty quarter eagle. Sometimes mistakenly called dies trial pieces, the copper and aluminum strikes from regular-design gold dies in fact were issued for direct sale to contemporary collectors. This piece displays a rich brown obverse with subtle blue highlighting while the reverse is more of a red-brown with blue flash. The reverse has a die crack which radiates from about noon at the rim to the eagle's head; a rather unusual occurrence on a pattern.
Ex Bob Simpson.
This is one of those odd situations where the pattern of the same design as the regular issue, at a fraction of the regular issue mintage, sells for well below the level of its regular issue counterpart. A situation destined for a market correction.
