Judd-439 - 1865 Liberty Quarter Eagle / NGC PF-61
Judd-439; Pollock-512. Rarity Low 7 (less than 12 existent; 2 known gilt). Struck in gilt copper with a reeded edge. Both the obverse and reverse dies are those of the regular issue Liberty Quarter Eagle of 1865. Lemon-yellow in color with just a hint of reddish patina. A small lint struck-through in the field in front of Liberty's nose and mouth, and well as a few small planchet voids in the reverse field can be used to pedigree the piece, although none distract from the great eye appeal of this piece. Fully deserving of a higher grade than that assigned by NGC.
This is another of those strange situations where a pattern issue of the same design as a regular issue, but with a small fraction of the mintage, in this case of both the mint state and proof issues, sells for a fraction of the price of its relatively more common counterpart.
